Let's face it, mindfulness and meditation have become new buzz words of today, but why the big hype? Sure, if the purpose of meditation was to clear the mind, and a clear mind was a short cut to inner peace, who wouldn't want to meditate? In our fast paced world, with endless to do list, endless responsibilities, and the “not enough time disease,” short cuts to anything are of the utmost value, and highly sought after, so it would make sense for people to gravitate to meditation or mindfulness, if it was a quick fix.
However, this could not be far from the truth. In fact, meditation and mindfulness quite the opposite, and are in no way quick fixes to today’s problems, but a life long journey to WAKING UP TO ALL the moments of life, pleasant or not, each one requiring the same level of attention, awareness, as we learn to not pass one moment up for another.
So how does this help our highly stressed society and why all the hype? Attention and awareness are steady point where we can rest and observe these ever changing states of mind, body and heart, without being caught up and swept away by them. And, it is in awareness itself that we can experience more moments of peace, greater meaning, and most importantly an enhanced quality of life that lives no farther then our own breath and body, moment to moment.
